About The Role

The role

Join Gateley Smithers Purslow as an Apprentice Engineer and dive into the world of Civil & Structural Engineering. You'll work alongside Experienced Engineers who provide practical and workable solutions to building and infrastructure situations. From a house extension to a new factory, school, or housing development, we provide the following services to our clients that you can expect to get involved with:

  • Refurbishment & Conservation
  • New Build & Infrastructure

Our Apprenticeship Programme allows you to fast track your career. You’ll get the opportunity to combine hands-on experience with academic study, learning whilst you and earn simultaneously. As an Apprentice, you’ll benefit from on-the-job training, mentorship and a structured development plan. We'll cover the costs and give you the support you need to achieve your professional qualifications.

On this apprenticeship you will complete the Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship with Nottingham Trent university. This is delivered on a day release basis across a 5-year duration.

Upon successful completion of the programme you will be awarded a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering. You will then be able to apply for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), following successful completion of your End Point Assessment.


As an Apprentice you will support with:

  • Assisting the Engineering team preparation of reports, calculations, design and preparation of drawings.
  • Assisting the Engineering team to provide technical advice to clients.
  • Assisting the Engineering team to obtaining planning and/or building regulations approval.
  • Monitoring and inspecting work undertaken by contractors.
  • Liaising with other professionals such as architects and building surveyors.
  • Assisting the Engineering team to maintain client relationships by providing excellent customer service and managing expectations.
  • Assisting the Engineering team to ensure that all projects comply with legal requirements including CDM2015, Part wall, Listed buildings.
  • At all times to comply with the requirements of the Company’s administrative, personnel procedures and Health & Safety regulations
  • Assisting the Engineering team with inspection and surveys of client properties and sites.

Gateley Smithers Purslow’s goal is to be recognised for solving complex building, construction and property issues for commercial and private clients, the public sector and the insurance claims market.

The person

What you’ll need:

  • Have gained a minimum of 5 GCSE qualifications, grade 4-9 Including Maths and English and 120 UCAS Tariff points from three A-levels which must include Maths or equivalent qualifications.
  • A full UK driving license and access to a car is essential for this role. Regular travel to various client sites, often in remote locations will be required.
  • Be a UK/EU/EAA resident for at least three years prior to starting the course and have the right to work in the UK.
  • You are at least 18 years old and have left full time education when the apprenticeship starts.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, which allow you to liaise with clients and work as part of a wider national team.
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail to produce technical documents.
  • Methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Experience of working to deadlines
  • Demonstrate understanding of relevant legislation.
