About The Role

The Role
We are seeking to hire a technically strong, considered, and ambitious Corporate Tax Associate to join our established Corporate Tax team to play a key role in growing our employee share schemes offering within our practice.

This is an exciting time to join the team and work closely with Senior Associate - David Williams, who has a particular specialism in employee share schemes, and employment taxes. He frequently advises clients on the design and implementation of a wide range of all-employee and discretionary share plans, from tax-advantaged share option arrangements to bespoke share and cash-based structures tailored to the clients’ needs.  He also provides specialist advice in connection with wider employment-related securities and employment tax issues in the context of M&A transactions, and on income tax, CGT and IHT issues arising in the context of employee benefit trusts. This position will ideally be based in one of our regional offices.

We are seeking applications from experienced Tax lawyers who have between 3 – 5 PQE years post qualification experience who are qualified to practice law in England and Wales (or have equivalent experience).

As part of our ongoing strategy to grow and development the team the successful candidate will have very good prospects for future promotion.

If you are looking for an opportunity to work within a supportive, ambitious, growing and energetic team and would like to join an award-winning law led professional services business, we would like to hear from you.

Gateley are fully embracing the new hybrid culture, so a mixture of both home and office working is available.

The Team
Gateley Legal’s UK wide Corporate Tax team consists of 10 Corporate Tax lawyers and two trainees. It currently comprises two Partners, one Of Counsel, three Senior Associates, one Associate, two solicitors and one tax apprentice. The team is evenly spread throughout our Birmingham, Manchester, and Leeds offices.

We support our clients with high-quality, expert corporate tax and VAT advice across the entire spectrum. The team has a breadth of experience that specialises in; corporate re-organisations or demergers, mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, tax planning for entrepreneurs, property investment, property development, share schemes and management incentivisation, employee share schemes, asset finance and banking and lending.

We act for both UK resident and non-UK resident clients providing UK tax advice. Our clients comprise individuals, companies, trusts, partnerships (of all types), employers, employees, business owners, business investors/investment funds and private equity houses, banks, landowners, property investor and housebuilders that operate in all sectors of the economy.

Our clients come to us because they know they receive clear and commercial tax advice regarding how to manage their tax position. But they also want our proactive approach to providing practical recommendations on how to navigate current legislation and case law.

Our tax advice team has the expertise and experience to advise on all types of tax issues. This gives our clients the continuity they need, alongside a streamlined service that delivers consistently high-quality advice at exceptional value for money.

The Person
Even if you have no prior employee share schemes experience, we would like to talk to you. We are looking for a technically sound Corporate Tax Associate with a keen interest in employee incentives and a thirst for learning; who enjoys working in a team and who has an eye for detail. The ability to recognise and then criticise a precise distinction in a text or a structure, and being able to condense complex ideas into clear drafting are the key qualities we are looking for. We are looking for people who enjoy puzzles because most of our work is about working out the meaning and effect of a case or piece of legislation or government guidance. We are also looking for individuals who thrive on understanding clients’ objectives, turning ideas into practical solutions and delivering projects successfully. And we need those people to put the complex into a readable and interesting form which our clients can the act upon.

The successful candidate will join a team that believes in investing in training and development and nurturing talent. There is huge scope to develop your career with us. If you join us, you will work closely alongside lawyers who are all experts in their field and who see an important part of their role as sharing their knowledge and experience with you. Most of your training will be on a one-to-one basis but you will have the opportunity to undertake external training courses and qualifications where feasible.

Candidates will be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • The ability to work effectively in a team of other senior and junior lawyers with the objective of delivering an exceptional client experience
  • Strong drafting and technical skills
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and a confident manner in engaging with clients and both more senior and junior colleagues as well as peers
  • A strong team work ethic and the ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Experience of managing, supervising and mentoring more junior lawyers and other colleagues would be advantageous
  • A willingness to get involved in and help to organise internal business development activities
  • Drive, commitment, self-motivation and a "can do" attitude
  • Discretion and professionalism always
  • Exceptional attention to detail

We have a strong infrastructure to deliver and provide a comprehensive training programme encompassing technical legal, transactional & project management and soft skills throughout the careers of our lawyers.
