The Role
As a graduate at Gateley Hamer, you will be rotated throughout the three business units to gain varied experience in each for the purposes of your APC. Your role will be split evenly between Compulsory Purchase, Utilities Compensation and Infrastructure Development.

You will be involved with landowner consultations and advising clients on all aspects of Development Consent Orders for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects. You will also be required to engage and negotiate with landowners and carry out landowner consultations as part of this process. In addition, we advise acquiring authorises on the promotion and implementation of compulsory purchase powers.  Your role will include third party consultation and reporting to clients on all matters required in the land assembly process.

We are involved in all stages of the compulsory purchase process from pre-application consultation to negotiating compensation claims.  You are likely to be involved with all stages of the process, working for both landowners and acquiring authorities across a range of projects, although you may be required to work on a single project for sustained periods from time to time.

In respect of Utilities Compensation, the Company’s work predominantly relates to electricity infrastructure but we also advise on gas, water, oil and telecommunications. The majority of the team’s clients are residential developers along with a number of commercial developers and some private landowners.

You will be required to understand the valuation principals involved in acquiring rights and compiling market evidence for submission of compensation claims, which may necessitate you to prepare or assist in the preparation of development appraisals.  You will also be required to prepare strategy reports to advise developers where sites are affected by utility apparatus and to develop a thorough understanding of the different legislation that each utility operates under in relation to acquiring rights and the basis of compensation.

As a graduate at Gateley Hamer you will be entitled to enrol onto an appropriate pathway for the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) with a view to obtaining membership status within a reasonable period of time.
